Modern Heritage Observatory 2nd Regional Symposium

On the 1 November 2013, the Modern Heritage Observatory (MoHO) held its second regional meeting at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Modern Heritage Observatory (MoHO) is a network of institutions and individuals from the Middle East and North Africa working together for the preservation of the region’s modern cultural heritage and focusing on photography, music, architecture and film. Founded in 2012 by the Arab Image Foundation, the Arab Center for Architecture, the Association for Arabic Music and the Cinémathèque de Tanger, MoHO now boasts a strong network of over 30 members.

As they struggle for sustainability, cultural heritage actors in the MENA region are seeking to raise awareness of the need to support and improve the preservation of modern cultural heritage among political and institutional sectors and the general public. The network have come together to mobilise for joint action to impact policies and legal frameworks, and to generate political commitment towards modern cultural heritage.

The Modern Heritage Observatory network facilitates a vital exchange of experience, pooling of expertise and elaboration of strategies for joint advocacy actions between members. The network organises trainings, national and regional meetings and symposia, film screenings and exhibitions. After organising a successful inaugural celebration in Lebanon of International Archives Day in June 2013, where archival institutions across Beirut opened their doors to the general public over a weekend, the celebration was also marked in 2014 with an expanded programme. The MoHO network has also produced a review published in November 2013, the Modern Heritage Observer, and regularly gathers relevant news and resources on its website and Facebook page. The members hope that their efforts will contribute to making the modern cultural heritage of the Arab world more extensively preserved and widely accessible.

This initiative was funded by the European Union and the Heinrich Böll Foundation from January 2012 to January 2014.
